Cut pattern pieces

Lay out the ring-spun cotton/polyester fabric on a flat surface. Using a hoodie pattern for the desired size, place pattern pieces (front, back, sleeves, pocket if included) on the fabric. Mark with fabric chalk and cut carefully with scissors or rotary cutter.

Prepare rib cuffs and hem

Cut rib knit fabric for sleeve cuffs and bottom hem according to pattern measurements. Stretch the rib slightly when aligning to sleeves and hem to ensure a snug finish.

Assemble body

Pin front and back pieces right sides together at shoulders. Sew shoulder seams with a stretch stitch or serger, using matching black thread. Press seams flat with an iron on a low setting appropriate for the fabric.

Attach sleeves

With the body laid flat, pin each sleeve into the armhole matching notches. Sew using a stretch stitch or serger, then sew side seams from sleeve edge to hem in one continuous seam on each side. Finish seams with overlock or zig-zag if needed.

Attach rib cuffs and hem

Fold rib cuffs and hem pieces and align to sleeve ends and body bottom with right sides together, slightly stretching the rib to fit. Pin and sew with a stretch stitch or twin needle for a professional look. Turn right side out and press lightly.

Cut and sew the hood

Cut two hood outer pieces from main fabric and two lining pieces from hood lining fabric. With right sides together, sew the curved center seam on both outer and lining pieces. Turn outer hood right side out, insert lining (wrong sides together), align neck edges and stitch along the neckline where the hood attaches to the body.

Install grommets

Mark placement for the two grommets symmetrically on the front neckline opening. Carefully punch holes and set grommets using the grommet setting tool following manufacturer instructions.

Add drawcord

Thread the drawcord through the hood channel using a safety pin or bodkin. Trim to length and attach aglets to each end. Tie a small knot inside each aglet if needed to secure.

Prepare artwork

Scale the retro Guy logo to the desired chest or center placement size using design software. Mirror the image if using heat-transfer vinyl (HTV).

Cut and weed HTV

Load the matte white HTV into your cutter with the carrier sheet facing down (or as manufacturer directs). Cut the design, then use weeding tools to remove excess vinyl leaving only the logo on the carrier.

Apply the logo

Preheat the hoodie area where the logo will go for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture. Position the weeded HTV logo on the preheated fabric with the carrier sheet up. Cover with a Teflon sheet or butcher paper. Press with a heat press at the HTV recommended temperature (usually 300–320°F / 150–160°C) for 10–15 seconds with medium pressure, or use a household iron set to the cotton setting applying firm pressure for 25–30 seconds. Allow to cool slightly, then peel the carrier sheet according to the HTV instructions (hot or cold peel).

Final finishing

Check all seams and trims for loose threads; trim and secure. Apply iron-on seam tape to any hems or inside facings if extra reinforcement is desired. Sew the laundry care label into a side seam or neck seam according to preference.

Quality check and pressing

Inspect the hoodie for even seams, correct logo placement, and secure grommets. Give the entire garment a final gentle press with an iron through a pressing cloth to remove any remaining wrinkles without damaging HTV.

Care instructions

Advise wash inside out on cold, gentle cycle and hang to dry or tumble low. Avoid bleach and dry-cleaning to preserve the HTV logo and fabric finish.
