Method

If using simple syrup

1

Place a rocks glass on the bar and add 1/2 tsp simple syrup (or 1/2 tsp demerara sugar dissolved in a little water) to the glass.

2

Add 3 dashes of Angostura bitters directly onto the syrup in the glass.

3

Add a splash (about 0.25 oz) of filtered water if desired to help integrate flavors.

4

Pour 2 oz Bulleit Bourbon into the glass over the syrup and bitters.

5

Add one large ice cube (or a handful of ice) and gently stir for 20–30 seconds until the drink is chilled and slightly diluted.

6

Express the oils from an orange peel over the glass by holding the peel with the outer skin facing down about 2–3 inches above the drink and giving it a firm twist. Rub the peel around the rim, then drop it into the glass as garnish.

If using a sugar cube

7

Place one sugar cube in a rocks glass and saturate it with 3 dashes of Angostura bitters and a splash (about 0.25 oz) of water.

8

Muddle the sugar cube, bitters, and water together until mostly dissolved and you have a syrupy base on the bottom of the glass.

9

Add 2 oz Bulleit Bourbon to the glass.

10

Add a large ice cube and gently stir for 20–30 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the cocktail.

11

Express the oils from an orange peel over the glass, rub the peel around the rim, and drop it into the drink as garnish.
