Method

Prepare equipment

1

Warm cup or teapot

Pour the optional 0.25 cups of boiling water into your teapot or cup, swirl briefly, then discard the water. Warming the vessel helps maintain proper brewing temperature.

Heat water

2

Bring fresh cold water to a gentle boil, then remove from heat and let it cool for 1–2 minutes. Target water temperature is about 75–85°C (167–185°F). For 1 cup of tea, use 1 cup of water.

Steep tea

3

Place 1 teaspoon of loose green tea leaves into an infuser or add one green tea bag to the warmed cup or teapot. Pour the 1 cup of hot water (at 75–85°C) over the tea. Start timing immediately.

4

Steep for 1.5–3 minutes depending on desired strength: 1.5–2 minutes for a lighter cup, up to 3 minutes for a fuller flavor. Avoid steeping longer than 3 minutes to prevent bitterness.

5

Remove the tea bag or strain out the leaves promptly when the steep time is reached.

Finish and serve

6

Taste the tea. If desired, add sweetener (honey or sugar) about 1 teaspoon, stir until dissolved. Add a lemon slice or 2 fresh mint leaves for aroma if preferred. Although milk is not traditional with green tea, add up to 1 tablespoon if you prefer a creamier texture.

7

Serve immediately while hot.
