Fresh Cantaloupe

Method

Fresh Cantaloupe

1

Select and prepare

Choose a medium ripe cantaloupe: it should give slightly when pressed at the blossom end and have a sweet aroma. Rinse the cantaloupe under cool running water and pat dry with a clean towel.

2

Cut and seed

Place the cantaloupe on a cutting board. Using a sharp chef's knife, cut off both ends to create flat surfaces. Stand the melon on one cut end and slice down the middle to halve it. Use a spoon to scoop out and discard the seeds and the stringy center from each half.

3

Remove rind and dice

Place a melon half cut-side down. Run the knife between the flesh and rind to remove the skin, working in sections so you preserve as much flesh as possible. Repeat for the other half. Cut the peeled halves into 1-inch cubes for easy sharing. Aim for uniform pieces so they’re easy to pick up with forks or toothpicks.

4

Make dressing

In a small bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon honey until combined and slightly emulsified. This brightens the melon and adds a touch of sweetness that helps when sharing with people who may prefer a little extra flavor.

5

Toss and season

Place the diced cantaloupe in a large bowl or directly on your serving platter. Drizzle the lemon-honey dressing evenly over the melon and gently toss to coat the pieces without breaking them. Tear the mint leaves into small strips and scatter over the melon. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt evenly and finish with 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Taste and adjust: add up to another 1/2 teaspoon honey or lemon if desired.

To Serve & Share

6

Transfer the dressed cantaloupe to a large serving platter or leave in the bowl for a casual setting. Arrange small wooden forks or toothpicks at one side so guests can pick up pieces without using their hands. Place napkins nearby.

7

If offering lime wedges, arrange them around the platter so guests can squeeze additional citrus if they like. Encourage sharing by positioning the platter in the center of the group with forks and napkins within easy reach.

8

Leftovers: cover and refrigerate any unused melon within two hours. Consume within 2–3 days for best texture and flavor.
