Build the drink
Place 4 large ice cubes into a rocks glass (old-fashioned glass).
Add bittersweet components
Pour 1 oz Campari over the ice, then add 1 oz sweet vermouth directly into the glass.
Top with soda
Gently add 2 oz chilled soda water down the side of the glass so the drink layers slightly but remains mixed. Adjust soda amount to taste if you prefer a lighter or stronger drink.
Stir gently
Using a bar spoon, stir the cocktail once or twice—just enough to combine the Campari, vermouth, and soda without flattening the carbonation.
Garnish and serve
Express the oils of an orange twist over the glass by holding the twist skin-side down and giving it a quick pinch, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it (or a thin orange slice) into the drink. Serve immediately.
