Muddle strawberries
Place the 3 hulled, roughly chopped strawberries in a cocktail shaker. Add the fresh lime juice (0.5 oz) and 0.5 oz agave syrup. Use a muddler to press the strawberries until they’re broken down and release their juice but not completely pureed (about 10–15 seconds). This extracts bright strawberry flavor and integrates the sweetener.
Build & Shake
Add 2 oz Hornitos Reposado tequila, 0.5 oz Amaro Montenegro and 1 oz fresh orange juice to the shaker with the muddled strawberry mixture.
Fill the shaker with ice (enough to chill thoroughly) and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until well-chilled and slightly frothy from the strawberry.
Strain & Finish
Double-strain the cocktail into a rocks glass over a large ice cube (use a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh sieve) to remove seeds and pulp for a smooth texture.
Season with black pepper
Lightly crack fresh black pepper over the top: 2 turns of a mill or a light pinch. The pepper should be a bright aromatic accent — start light and adjust to taste. Swirl gently with a bar spoon to incorporate the aroma without overly dispersing the pepper.
Garnish
Garnish with an orange wheel or twist and a strawberry slice on the rim or a pick. Optionally express an orange peel over the drink before dropping it in to add bright citrus oils.
