Coffee

Method

Prepare equipment

1

Gather

Gather a kettle, coffee grinder (if using whole beans), a medium (12 oz) mug or a brewer (pour-over cone, French press, or drip machine), a spoon, and a timer.

2

If using a brewer, ensure it is clean and any filter (paper or metal) is in place.

Grind and measure

3

Grind beans

Measure 2 tablespoons of medium-roast whole beans (or use pre-ground medium grind). Grind to a medium consistency — similar to granulated sugar — if using whole beans. Place grounds in the brewer basket, filter, or directly in the French press.

Heat water

4

Bring fresh cold water to a boil, then remove from heat and let sit 30 seconds to reach about 200°F (93°C). Measure about 12 ounces (approx. 350 ml) of hot water.

Brew

5

Pour-over or drip

If using pour-over or drip: wet the paper filter with hot water and discard rinse water. Add grounds to the filter. Start a timer: pour a small amount (about 30–40 ml) of hot water to saturate the grounds and let bloom 30 seconds. Continue pouring slowly in concentric circles until you reach 12 oz total. Total brew time should be about 2.5–3.5 minutes for pour-over.

6

French press

If using French press: add grounds and pour all 12 oz hot water over them. Stir gently to ensure all grounds are wet. Place the lid with the plunger up and let steep for 4 minutes. Slowly press the plunger down and pour immediately to avoid over-extraction.

7

Drip machine

If using an automatic drip machine: add grounds to the filter and pour water into the reservoir following the machine’s markings for a 12 oz cup. Start the machine and let brew fully.

Finish and serve

8

Pour the brewed coffee into a 12 oz (medium) mug if not already. Taste and add optional ingredients to preference: about 1–2 tbsp milk or cream, 1 tsp sugar or sweetener, or a small pinch (1 tsp) of a flavoring like vanilla or cinnamon. Stir to combine.

9

Serve immediately. Enjoy hot.
