Coffee Base

Equipment (included as ingredients to ensure direction coverage)

Method

Preparation

1

Measure and heat

Measure 2 tablespoons of freshly ground medium-fine coffee. Pour 12 fl oz (about 355 ml) of fresh cold water into a kettle and heat to just below boiling (around 200°F / 93°C). If using an electric kettle with temperature control, set to 200°F.

2

Pre-warm vessel

While the water heats, pre-warm your mug and/or coffee maker by rinsing with a little hot water, then discard the rinse. This helps maintain brewing temperature.

Brewing (choose one method)

3

Automatic drip coffee maker

Place a filter in the basket and add the 2 tbsp ground coffee. Pour the heated water (or cold water if your machine heats it) into the machine’s reservoir to yield 12 fl oz brewed. Start the machine and allow it to complete the cycle. Serve immediately.

4

Pour-over (Chemex/V60)

Set a paper filter in the pour-over cone and rinse it with hot water, then discard rinse. Add the grounds. Start a timer. Pour a small amount (~40 ml) of hot water to saturate the grounds and bloom for 30–45 seconds. Slowly pour the remaining water in a steady spiral over 2:00–2:30 minutes until you reach 12 fl oz brewed. Remove filter and serve.

5

French press

Add grounds to the French press. Pour about half the hot water, stir gently to wet all grounds, then add the remainder. Place the lid (without plunging) and let steep for 4 minutes. Slowly press the plunger down and immediately pour into your mug to avoid over-extraction.

Customize and serve

6

If desired, add optional ingredients: stir in up to 1 teaspoon sugar or sweetener to taste, 1 tablespoon heavy cream or 1 fl oz milk (more if you prefer a creamier cup), or 1/2 tablespoon flavored syrup. Taste and adjust. Serve hot.

7

If you prefer iced coffee: allow freshly brewed coffee to cool for 5–10 minutes, pour over a cup filled with ice, then add milk and sweetener as desired.

Cleanup

8

Discard grounds and used filter (or compost grounds). Rinse or wash the coffee maker, kettle, French press, or pour-over cone and any utensils. Dry and store.
