Method
Coffee
Dose, grind and tamp
Weigh 18 g of freshly roasted coffee and grind to a fine espresso setting. Distribute grounds evenly in the portafilter and tamp with 15–20 kg of pressure to create a level puck.
Pull the espresso
Lock the portafilter into a heated espresso machine. Brew a double shot aiming for about 36 ml of espresso in 25–30 seconds. Adjust grind if extraction is significantly faster or slower.
Assembly
Preheat a 240–300 ml cup by rinsing with hot water, then discard the rinse water.
Pour 120 ml of hot water (just off boil, about 92–96°C) into the preheated cup.
Immediately pour the 36 ml double espresso over the hot water. Conventionally, Americano is made by adding espresso to hot water to preserve crema and flavor; pour gently to combine.
Taste and adjust: if desired, add up to 15 ml milk or cream and/or 1 tsp sweetener. Stir gently to combine.
Serve immediately. Provide a small spoon if milk or sweetener was added.
