Bread & Spread

Method

Toast & Butter

1

Preheat

If using an oven or toaster oven, preheat to 375°F (190°C). If using a pop-up toaster, set to medium (medium-dark if you prefer a darker toast).

2

Place the 2 slices of bread in the toaster or on a baking sheet for the oven/toaster oven.

3

Toast the bread until golden brown and crisp to your preference (about 2–4 minutes in a pop-up toaster, 5–7 minutes in a toaster oven at 375°F), flipping once in a skillet or under the broiler if needed to brown evenly.

4

Remove the bread promptly and place on a cutting board or plate. While the bread is hot, spread 1 tablespoon unsalted butter evenly across the 2 slices so it melts into the surface. If using salt, sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon evenly over the buttered toast to taste.

Optional Topping Variations

5

Jam or Preserve

Spread 1 teaspoon of jam onto each slice (2 teaspoons total). Serve immediately so the jam softens slightly from the warm toast.

6

Peanut Butter

Spread 1 teaspoon peanut butter onto each slice (2 teaspoons total). If desired, drizzle a little honey (1 teaspoon) on top of peanut butter for sweetness.

7

Avocado Toast

Mash 2 tablespoons avocado with 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Spread the smashed avocado evenly across the 2 slices. Drizzle 1 teaspoon olive oil and sprinkle 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper and, if desired, 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes for heat.

8

Simple Olive Oil Finish

Instead of butter, brush each slice with 1/2 teaspoon olive oil (1 teaspoon total). Optionally finish with a small pinch of salt or pepper.
