For the Foot-Long Hot Dog and Bun

Specialty Sauce Options (optional, use one or more)

Method

For the Foot-Long Hot Dog and Bun

1

Prep the bun

Lightly butter the inside of the foot-long bun with 1 tablespoon softened butter, spreading evenly along both sides of the split. Set aside.

2

Cook the hot dog

Choose your cooking method: stovetop, grill, or oven. Stovetop: bring a skillet with 1/4 cup water to a simmer, add the hot dog, cover, and steam for 4–6 minutes until heated through; remove the lid and sear for 30–60 seconds to brown. Grill: preheat grill to medium-high and grill the hot dog, turning occasionally, 6–8 minutes until char marks appear and it is heated through. Oven: preheat oven to 400°F (200°C), wrap hot dog in foil and bake 8–10 minutes. Remove hot dog and rest 1 minute.

3

Place the buttered bun cut-side down on a hot skillet or grill for 30–60 seconds until golden and slightly crisp. Alternatively, place open-faced under a broiler for 1–2 minutes—watch carefully to avoid burning.

Basic Build / Optional Toppings

4

Place the cooked hot dog inside the toasted bun centered lengthwise.

5

Apply condiments and toppings in your preferred order. Suggested combos: - Classic: yellow mustard (2 tsp) and ketchup (2 tsp) with diced onion (2 tbs) and relish (2 tbs). - New York style: mustard, sauerkraut (3 tbs), and diced onion. - Chicago-like (adapted for foot-long): mustard, pickle spear (1), sport peppers or banana peppers (6 rings), diced onion (2 tbs), and a sprinkle of black pepper. - Spicy: spicy mayo (2 tsp), jalapeño slices (4), and crispy fried onions (2 tbs). For cheese: spoon warm beer cheese sauce (2 tbs) or add shredded cheese (1 oz) on top so it melts slightly from the hot dog.

6

If using sauces like garlic aioli or beer cheese, dollop or drizzle evenly across the top (approx. amounts noted in ingredients). For sauerkraut, warm in a small pan for 1–2 minutes and drain any excess liquid before adding to the dog.

Specialty Sauce Options

7

Spicy mayo: mix 1 part sriracha with 3 parts mayonnaise (approx. use 2 tsp total), taste and adjust. Garlic aioli: stir 1–2 tsp ready aioli or combine 2 tsp mayo with 1 small minced garlic clove. Beer cheese: gently warm 2 tbs in a small saucepan on low, stirring to loosen to a drizzleable consistency.

To Finish

8

Sprinkle coarse ground black pepper (to taste; suggested 1 tsp) and chopped fresh parsley (1 tbs) over the assembled hot dog for brightness. Serve immediately while hot.
