Milk Preparation
- 1
Measure milk
Pour 4 cups of whole milk into a small saucepan or measuring pitcher. If you prefer a lighter milk, you can substitute up to 0.5 cup of the milk with cold water; add that now.
- 2
Heat gently (optional)
Place the saucepan over low to medium-low heat. Heat the milk slowly, stirring occasionally, until it is warm but not boiling — about 140–150°F (60–65°C) if using a thermometer. This step is optional if you plan to drink milk cold, but warming helps dissolve any added sugar and melds flavors.
- 3
Sweeten and flavor (optional)
If making sweetened or flavored milk, add 1 tablespoon granulated sugar and a pinch of salt to the warm milk. Whisk until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Taste and adjust sweetness or vanilla as desired.
- 4
Cool (if warmed)
If you warmed the milk and want it cold, let it cool at room temperature for 10–15 minutes, then transfer to the refrigerator until chilled. To cool faster, pour into a shallow container and refrigerate or add a couple of ice cubes briefly (remove ice before serving to avoid dilution).
- 5
Serve
Pour the milk into a pitcher or serving glasses. Serve warm (as is) or chilled over ice. Store any leftover milk in a sealed container in the refrigerator and consume within 2–3 days for best quality.
