Tea Preparation

Method

Tea Preparation

1

Heat water

Bring 480 ml of fresh cold water to the proper temperature. For black tea, heat to a rolling boil (100°C / 212°F). If using green or white tea, heat to 75–85°C (not boiling). Use a kettle and remove from heat when the target temperature is reached.

2

Warm pot or cup

Pour 120 ml of the heated water into the teapot or cup, swirl to warm the vessel for 10–15 seconds, then discard the warming water. This helps maintain steeping temperature.

3

Measure tea

Place 2 teaspoons (approx. 2 tsp loose-leaf) of black tea into an infuser or teapot per 480 ml (2 cups) of water. If using tea bags, use one standard tea bag per 240 ml; for 480 ml use two tea bags or one large bag.

4

Pour water over tea

Pour the remaining hot water directly over the tea leaves or tea bag to ensure full expansion and even extraction. Start timing immediately.

5

Steep

Steep black tea for 3–5 minutes depending on desired strength (3 minutes for lighter, 5 for stronger). If using green tea, steep 2–3 minutes; white tea 3–4 minutes. Avoid oversteeping to prevent bitterness.

6

Remove leaves or bag

At the end of the steep time, remove the infuser or tea bag promptly to stop extraction. Gently press the bag against the side of the cup or infuser lid to release a bit of liquid if desired, but avoid squeezing leaves (can add bitterness).

7

Finish and serve

If desired, add up to 60 ml milk and/or 1 tsp sweetener to taste. Stir gently. Add a lemon slice if preferred (do not add lemon if you added milk). Serve immediately.
