Preparation and serving

1

Warm the glass

Select a heatproof Irish coffee glass or a stemmed glass. Fill it with hot water to warm the glass while you prepare other components. After a minute, discard the water and dry the inside.

2

Sugar rim (optional)

Lightly moisten the rim with a cut citrus peel or a little coffee. Dip the rim in the teaspoon of granulated sugar so the rim is evenly coated. Set the glass aside.

3

Add liqueurs

Measure and pour 1 oz Kahlúa and 1 oz Cointreau directly into the warmed glass.

4

Add hot coffee

Pour 4 oz of freshly brewed strong hot coffee into the glass over the liqueurs. Stir gently with a bar spoon to combine the liqueurs and coffee.

5

Optional flaming garnish (advanced & use caution)

If you want the classic flambéed orange-flavored top: pour a small teaspoon of overproof rum or very lightly brush the citrus peel with a little overproof spirit (not included in the ingredient list). Sprinkle a teaspoon of granulated sugar on top of the coffee surface. Using a long lighter, carefully ignite the sugar (and spirit if used) and let the flame caramelize the sugar for a few seconds. Extinguish the flame before proceeding. WARNING: flaming drinks are hazardous — do not attempt if inexperienced, remove flammable materials, keep hair and clothing clear, and have a fire extinguisher nearby.

6

Top with whipped cream

Spoon or gently pipe about 2 tablespoons of freshly whipped cream on top so it floats as a distinct layer above the coffee. Do not stir — the drink is served layered.

7

Garnish and serve

Express a twist of lemon or orange peel over the top to release oils and optionally drop it on the cream. Serve immediately while hot.
