Cocktail

Garnish & Service

Method

Prepare

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill briefly with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure it is nicely chilled.

2

Measure and juice

Measure 1.5 oz cognac, 0.75 oz Grand Marnier and 0.25 oz fresh orange juice. If you like a slightly sweeter finish, measure 0.25 tsp simple syrup.

Mix

3

Combine ingredients

Add the cognac, Grand Marnier, orange juice and simple syrup (if using) into a cocktail shaker.

4

Add ice

Fill the shaker with about 4 medium ice cubes to properly chill and dilute the cocktail.

5

Shake

Put the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and slightly frosted. This both chills and gives a silkier texture.

Serve

6

Strain

Discard the ice or water from your chilled glass. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to catch any small ice shards or pulp.

7

Garnish and finish

Express the oils of an orange twist over the surface of the drink by holding the twist skin-side down and giving it a firm squeeze, then rub the rim of the glass with the peel and drop it in (or perch it on the rim). Optionally add a dehydrated orange wheel for an elegant look.

8

Serve immediately as an after-dinner sipper. Enjoy slowly to appreciate the orange-cognac complexity.
