1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer or fill with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

2

Measure and combine

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker, add 1 oz Green Chartreuse, 1/2 oz Yellow Chartreuse, 3/4 oz cognac (or good quality brandy), 1/4 oz fresh lemon juice, 1/4 oz simple syrup, and 1 dash orange bitters.

3

Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice and stir for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full strokes) until the mix is well chilled and slightly diluted. If you prefer a frothier, more aromatic version, you may shake briefly, but traditional preparation is stirring.

4

Prepare glass

Dump the ice water from the chilled glass if you used it, and dry the glass. If you used the freezer, remove the glass just before straining.

5

Strain

Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a Hawthorne or julep strainer (and a fine mesh if you shook) to keep any small ice chips out.

6

Garnish

Express the oils of a lemon twist over the drink by holding the twist over the surface and giving it a quick pinch, then run the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass as garnish.

7

Serve

Serve immediately as an after-dinner sipper. Sip slowly—the Chartreuse flavors are potent and complex.
