Method
Cocktail Preparation
Chill glass
Place a coupe or small cocktail glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the drink.
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add the Irish whiskey (or Cognac), Benedictine liqueur, sweet vermouth, fresh lemon juice, and Angostura bitters.
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup) and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker feels very cold and the mixture is well-chilled and slightly diluted.
Strain
Discard the ice from your chilled glass (if you used ice water) and double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or small cocktail glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer if available. If you prefer, a single fine strain is fine.
Garnish and serve
Express the oils from a lemon twist over the surface of the drink by holding the twist skin-side down and giving it a quick squeeze, then rub the rim of the glass with the twist and drop it into the cocktail. Add a Luxardo or cocktail cherry to the glass for a touch of sweetness. Serve immediately.
