Method

For the Cake

  1. 1

    Prepare the Oven

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well blended.

  3. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes until well combined.

  4. 4

    Incorporate Boiling Water

Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. Note that the batter will be thin.

  5. 5

    Bake the Cake

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cakes

Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, remove them from the pans and cool completely on wire racks.

For the Frosting

  1. 7

    Prepare the Frosting

In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with milk. Mix until smooth and creamy.

  2. 8

    Add Vanilla

Stir in the vanilla extract and mix until fully incorporated.

  3. 9

    Frost the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.

Optional Garnish

  1. 10

    Garnish the Cake

If desired, sprinkle chocolate shavings on top of the frosting and decorate with fresh raspberries.
