Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you build the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker, add the cognac, dry vermouth, crème de cassis, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with ice (about 1 cup). Stir gently for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted — aim for about 10–15% dilution.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

If you chilled the glass with ice water, discard the ice and water. If it was in the freezer, take it out just before straining.

  5. 5

    Strain and top (optional)

Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass. If you prefer a lighter finish, top with about 1 oz of sparkling water; otherwise serve without.

Garnish

  1. 6

Express a lemon twist over the surface of the cocktail to release oils, then rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it in or place it on the rim.

  2. 7

Optionally, skewer a fresh blackberry or cherry and rest it on the rim or drop into the drink for a visual nod to the crème de cassis.
