Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.

Simmer the Sauce
Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once done, stir in the chopped fresh basil and set aside.
Prepare the Calamari

Marinate the Calamari
In a bowl, pour the buttermilk over the calamari rings and let marinate for at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator.

Prepare the Breading Mixture
In a shallow dish, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.

Bread the Calamari
Remove the calamari from the buttermilk and let excess drip off. Dredge the rings in the flour mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated.

Fry the Calamari
Carefully add the breaded calamari to the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
