Method
Base & Spirits
Measure and combine spirits
Add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.5 oz blackstrap rum, and 0.5 oz coffee liqueur into a mixing glass.
These three form the backbone: whiskey for spice and body, rum for molasses depth, and coffee liqueur for roast and sweetness.
Sweetening & Bitters
Add syrups and bitters
Pour 0.5 oz demerara syrup into the mixing glass. Add 2 dashes chocolate bitters and 1 dash Angostura bitters.
The demerara syrup balances boozy notes; the chocolate and aromatic bitters tie the dessert/coffee profile together.
Citrus & Brighteners
Prepare citrus oils
Express the orange peel over the mixing glass by holding it with the outer (orange) side facing the drink and giving it a sharp squeeze so oils spray onto the surface. Rub the peel along the glass rim and set aside for garnish. If using the lemon twist, give it a light express and discard or keep as an alternate aroma.
Ice & Mixing
Strain and serve
Place a large ice cube in a chilled old-fashioned glass. Double-strain the mixed cocktail over the large ice cube to remove small ice shards and expresssed oils.
Finish & Garnish
Final aromatics and optional garnish
Hold the expressed orange peel over the drink and give one final twist so a burst of oils lands on the surface. Optionally lightly dust the top with 1/4 tsp freshly ground espresso for an extra nighttime coffee note. Place the orange peel on the rim or float it atop the drink.
Serve immediately. Sip slowly between 9 PM and 2 AM.
