Place the ice bucket on a stable surface near where you'll serve. Add 2 cups of crushed ice or ice cubes and enough cold water (about 500 ml) to come halfway up the interior of the bucket. Swirl briefly to create an even cold bath. Drain a little water if you prefer the bottle not to sit in too much liquid; the goal is a rapid, gentle chill to serving temperature.

Prepare the ice bucket

Place the NV Krug Grande Cuvée 278 in the prepared ice bucket, neck first, and let it rest for 20–30 minutes if the bottle is at cellar temperature (12–14°C / 54–57°F). If the bottle is at room temperature, allow 30–40 minutes. Ideal serving temperature for Krug is approximately 8–10°C (46–50°F). Avoid over-chilling below ~6°C, which mutes aromatics.

Chill the bottle

Set out 6 chilled champagne flutes or white-wine glasses. If using lemon twists, prepare one per glass by cutting a narrow strip of lemon peel and expressing the oils over the glass rim. If using raspberries, rinse and pat dry; place two raspberries per flute on a small napkin near each setting. Arrange any chosen hors d'oeuvres on plates for serving alongside the wine.

Prepare glassware and garnishes

With one hand keeping the cork steady, remove the foil from the bottle top and loosen the wire cage by untwisting the loop (typically 5 half-turns). Keep a thumb firmly on top of the cork while removing the cage to prevent sudden ejection.

Remove foil and loosen cage

Hold the bottle at a 45° angle pointing away from people and delicate items. With one hand holding the cork and cage, gently twist the bottle (not the cork) to ease the cork out. Aim for a soft sigh rather than a loud pop — this preserves bubbles and shows respect for a prestige cuvée.

Open quietly

Krug Grande Cuvée is crafted to be enjoyed upon release from the bottle; decanting is generally unnecessary. If you wish to open aromas for a larger group, pour slowly into a large, clean decanter and allow 10–15 minutes for the wine to breathe before serving. Note that extended exposure will alter the mousse and freshness.

Decant (optional)

Pour each flute approximately one-third to one-half full (90–120 ml) to allow aromatics to develop in the glass. Pour gently down the inside of the glass to preserve the bead and avoid excessive foam. Rotate bottles slightly between pours to ensure an even distribution of lees and blend character if present.

Pouring

Present the bottle briefly: mention NV Krug Grande Cuvée 278 and its blend (57% Pinot Noir, 23% Chardonnay, 20% Meunier). Note that Krug is known for a complex, layered profile with brioche, orchard fruit, honeyed and toasty notes and a long finish. Encourage guests to observe the fine bubbles, inhale deeply to pick up layered aromatics, and sip to assess texture and finish.

Presentation and tasting notes

If using a lemon twist, express oils over the glass rim and rest the twist alongside the flute. For a fruity accent, drop one or two raspberries into the flute (optional). Serve with light hors d'oeuvres such as mild cheeses, toasted brioche, smoked salmon canapés, or fresh oysters to complement Krug’s richness without overpowering it.

Garnish and pairings

If there is leftover wine, use a proper champagne stopper to reseal. Keep the bottle upright in the refrigerator and consume within 2–4 days for best preservation of bubbles and character. Note: Prestige blends like Krug will gradually lose fine effervescence and primary aromatics after opening.

Re-corking and leftover storage

Empty melted ice and water from the bucket, wash flutes gently in warm water (no dishwasher for fine crystal), and store glassware upright. Rinse and dry any serving implements used.
