Clean and prepare a large mixing container or wheelbarrow. Make sure all mineral ingredients (clay, sand, gravel) are free of debris; screen or break up any large clumps in the clay and loam so the final mix is uniform.

Combine Base Minerals

Place the 2 cups crushed clay, 2 cups coarse sand, and 1 cup pea gravel into the mixing container. These components create weight, structure and good drainage for the heavier 'Clay Sand Gravel Loam' blend intended for roses that prefer steady moisture but good root aeration.

Use a shovel or garden fork to mix the minerals together thoroughly until the clay is evenly distributed and there are no big pockets of one component.
Incorporate Loam and Organic Matter

Add 4 cups well-aged loam (screened topsoil) and 3 cups well-rotted compost to the mineral mix. These provide the primary nutrient-holding capacity and beneficial biology for roses.

Work in 1 cup coconut coir or shredded peat moss to increase moisture retention without making the mix soggy. Ensure the coir/peat is evenly distributed.
Add Drainage & Aeration

Fold in 1 cup perlite and 1 cup pine bark fines to increase aeration and long-term drainage channels in the mix. Mix until these are evenly dispersed and no large clumps remain.

Check texture by squeezing a handful of mix: it should hold shape loosely, break apart easily, and not feel overly greasy or clay-locked. If the mix compacts too much, add an additional 1/2 cup pine bark fines or 1/2 cup perlite and remix.
