Fresh Orange Juice

Method

Fresh Orange Juice

1

Prepare oranges

Wash the oranges thoroughly under cool running water to remove any dirt or residue. Roll each orange on the counter with firm pressure to loosen the juice inside.

2

Cut and juice

Cut each orange in half crosswise. Using a citrus juicer (manual or electric) or a reamer, press and rotate each half to extract the juice into a bowl or pitcher. Continue until you have juice from all oranges (should yield about 1 to 1 1/2 cups).

3

Strain (optional)

If you prefer pulp-free juice, pour the freshly squeezed orange juice through a fine-mesh strainer into a clean pitcher, pressing with a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard seeds and most of the pulp, or reserve pulp if you like some texture.

4

Adjust and chill

If the juice is very tart, stir in the optional sugar or simple syrup (start with 1 tsp) and a pinch of salt to round the flavor. Add 1 tablespoon cold water if the juice is too concentrated. Taste and adjust sweetness or salt as desired.

5

Serve

Fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the fresh orange juice over the ice. Serve immediately for best flavor. Leftover juice can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours; stir before serving.
