Base Cake

Crunchy Caramel Bits (optional 'slot' topping)

Method

Base Cake

1

Prepare and Preheat

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8‑inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.

2

In a medium bowl whisk together flour, baking powder and salt until evenly combined. Set aside.

3

In a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, beat softened butter and granulated sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3–4 minutes.

4

Add eggs one at a time, mixing for 20–30 seconds after each addition until incorporated. Scrape down the bowl as needed.

5

Mix in vanilla extract. With mixer on low, add flour mixture in three additions alternating with milk (flour, milk, flour, milk, finish with flour), mixing just until combined after each addition. Do not overmix.

6

Reserve 1 cup of batter in a small bowl for the chocolate swirl. Pour remaining batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.

Chocolate Swirl & Ganache

7

Make the cocoa paste for the swirl: whisk cocoa powder with boiling water until smooth. Stir this cocoa paste into the reserved 1 cup of batter until evenly colored.

8

Drop spoonfuls of the chocolate batter over the top of the plain batter in the pan in several spots. Use a thin knife or skewer to swirl the batters together to create a marbled pattern — make several long S‑shaped swirls but avoid fully mixing.

9

Bake the cake in the preheated oven for 28–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center (avoiding large pockets of chocolate) comes out with a few moist crumbs but not raw batter.

10

Allow the cake to cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then run a knife around the edge and invert onto the rack to cool completely (about 45–60 minutes) before adding ganache.

11

To make the ganache: place chopped dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan until it just begins to simmer (do not boil). Pour the hot cream over the chopped chocolate and let sit 1 minute, then stir until smooth and glossy. Stir in corn syrup if using for extra shine.

12

Once the cake is completely cool, place it on a serving plate and pour ganache over the center, letting it spread toward the edges. Use a spatula to encourage even coverage and a slight drip if desired. Allow ganache to set for 10–20 minutes at room temperature.

Crunchy Caramel Bits (optional 'slot' topping)

13

Make the caramel shards: line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat and set aside.

14

In a small heavy‑bottomed saucepan combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 2 tbsp water and stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Stop stirring and let the mixture simmer until it turns a deep amber color (watch carefully — it can go from amber to burnt quickly).

15

Remove from heat immediately and carefully whisk in the cold cubed butter (mixture will bubble). Stir until smooth, then whisk in the sea salt. Pour the caramel onto the prepared sheet and tilt to spread it into an even thin layer. Let cool completely until hardened, about 20–30 minutes.

16

Once set, break into small shards or chop into coarse bits. Use a sharp knife or your hands (be cautious—the edges can be sharp) to create small pieces resembling crunchy 'slot' toppings.

17

Scatter the caramel bits over the ganache, pressing lightly so they adhere, or place them in small clusters like slot machine icons.

Assembly & Garnish

18

Dust a light sprinkle of powdered sugar over exposed cake edges if desired.

19

Finish with chocolate shavings or curls placed in the center or around the edge for a polished look.

20

Allow ganache and caramel to set fully (about 15 minutes) before slicing. Use a sharp, warm knife (dip in hot water and wipe dry between cuts) to make clean slices.

21

Serve slices at room temperature. Store any leftover cake loosely covered at room temperature for 1 day or refrigerated for up to 4 days (bring to room temperature before serving).
