Grilled Item (choose one)

Seasoning & finishing for grilled item

Side (choose one)

Optional condiments

Method

Grilled Item (prepare one)

  1. 1

    Preheat

Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes until hot. If using an outdoor grill, preheat to medium-high (about 375–400°F / 190–205°C).

  2. 2

    Season

Pat the chosen protein dry with a paper towel. Lightly brush with vegetable oil and season both sides with a pinch of salt and a pinch of black pepper (about half of the listed salt and pepper total per side).

  3. 3

    Cook beef patty

For a 4 oz beef patty: place on the hot grill or skillet. Cook 3–4 minutes on the first side without pressing. Flip and cook 2–3 minutes for medium-well to well (adjust 1–2 minutes less for medium-rare). Internal temperature target ~160°F (71°C) for ground beef. During the last 30–60 seconds, place the slice of cheddar on the patty and cover briefly so it melts.

  4. 4

    Cook chicken breast

For a 3–4 oz thin chicken breast: grill 3–4 minutes per side until internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). During the last minute, place cheddar slice on top and cover to melt.

  5. 5

    Cook veggie patty

For a 3–4 oz veggie patty: cook 3–4 minutes per side until heated through and nicely browned. Add cheddar slice in the final minute and cover to melt (if the veggie patty is dairy-free, omit cheese).

  6. 6

    Rest

Transfer the cooked item to a plate and let rest 1–2 minutes to redistribute juices and finish melting cheese.

Bun & Assembly

  1. 7

While the protein rests, butter the cut sides of the bun with about 1 teaspoon of butter total.

  2. 8

Toast the bun butter-side down in the same skillet or on the grill for 30–60 seconds until golden and lightly crisp.

  3. 9

Place the cheesed grilled item on the bottom bun. Add any optional condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo) to taste—use about the indicated amounts for a kid-friendly portion. Top with the bun crown and serve.

Side

  1. 10

    Baby carrots

Arrange 6 baby carrots on the plate. Serve raw or steamed: to steam, place carrots in a small microwave-safe bowl with 1–2 tablespoons water, cover, and microwave 1–2 minutes until tender-crisp. Drain and serve.

  2. 11

    Apple slices

Core and thinly slice an apple to make about 1 cup of slices. Toss with a light squeeze of lemon juice if desired to prevent browning. Arrange on the plate.

  3. 12

    Fries

If using frozen fries: cook a 3 oz portion according to package directions (typically 10–12 minutes in a 425°F / 220°C oven or 8–10 minutes air-fryer), turning once, until golden and crisp. Season lightly with a pinch of salt and serve.

Serve

  1. 13

Plate the kid-size sandwich with the chosen side and optional condiments. Allow to cool slightly before serving to a child. Offer a napkin and a small cup of water or milk.
