Method

Preparation

1

Prewash and prepare fabric

Prewash and dry the black cotton knit and rib knit to pre-shrink and remove finishes. Press lightly with an iron to remove wrinkles. Lay fabric flat on a cutting surface.

2

Choose and prepare pattern

Select the T-shirt pattern in the intended size. Verify grainlines and pattern markings. If pattern pieces are tissue, press them flat or weigh them down so they lay smooth.

3

Cut fabric

Pin pattern pieces to the knit fabric following the grainline. Cut the front, back, two sleeves, and neckband from the rib knit. Transfer notches, darts, and other markings with tailor's chalk or washable marker.

Construction

4

Shoulder seams

With right sides together, align and pin the front and back shoulder seams. Using a stretch stitch (or narrow zigzag) and 1/4"–3/8" seam allowance, sew the shoulder seams. Finish seams with a serger or zigzag stitch if desired. Press seams toward the back.

5

Attach sleeves

With right sides together, match sleeve center to shoulder seam, then match sleeve edges to armhole notches. Pin evenly and sew with a stretch stitch using the same seam allowance. Finish seam as desired and press toward sleeve.

6

Side seams

Fold the shirt with right sides together and align side seams and sleeve seams. Pin from sleeve edge through to hem. Sew in one continuous seam from sleeve hem to body hem. Finish seams and press.

7

Neckband

Measure neck opening circumference. Cut rib knit neckband to 85% of that measurement for proper stretch and fit, keeping width per pattern. Join short ends of neckband with right sides together using a stretch stitch to form a loop. Fold band in half with wrong sides together and align raw edges to neckline; pin evenly. Sew with a stretch stitch or coverstitch, stretching band slightly as you sew so it fits the neckline. Press seam toward body and topstitch if desired with twin needle.

8

Hem sleeves and body

Fold sleeve hems up 1/2"–5/8" twice (to enclose raw edge) and press. Stitch using a stretch stitch or twin needle for a professional finish. Repeat for body hem, folding up 3/4"–1" depending on preference. Press hems.

Finishing

9

Trim any loose threads and give the tee a final press. Optionally wash and dry again to ensure seams settle. Label or tag as needed.
