Pasta

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Pasta

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 10-12 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  2. 2

    Drain the Pasta

Once the pasta is cooked, drain it in a colander and set aside. Reserve a cup of the pasta water for later use if needed.

Making the Bolognese Sauce

  1. 3

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are soft and the onion is translucent.

  2. 4

    Add Garlic

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

  3. 5

    Brown the Meat

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Use a wooden spoon to break it apart. Cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

  4. 6

    Combine Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

  5. 7

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the sauce is too thick, add reserved pasta water to reach desired consistency.

Combining the Dish

  1. 8

    Mix Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained penne pasta to the Bolognese sauce and toss to combine, ensuring all the pasta is well coated with the sauce.

  2. 9

    Serve

Divide the Penne Bolognese into serving bowls. Top with grated Parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh basil if desired. Serve immediately.
