1

Build and stir

Place a mixing glass or small pitcher on your work surface. Add 2 oz Elmer T. Lee bourbon, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters into the mixing glass. Add enough ice to fill the mixing glass.

2

Stir to chill and dilute

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly for about 20–30 seconds (roughly 20–30 full rotations) until well chilled and slightly diluted β€” the mixing glass should feel very cold to the touch and a small amount of frost may form.

3

Prepare the serving glass

Place one large ice cube (or several large cubes) into an old-fashioned or rocks glass.

4

Strain

Double-strain or use a Hawthorne/ julep strainer to pour the chilled bourbon mixture from the mixing glass into the prepared rocks glass over the ice.

5

Garnish

Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down above the glass and giving it a firm twist to spray the oils onto the surface. Rub the peel around the rim if desired, then drop the peel into the glass as garnish.

6

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the bourbon's nose and the soft sweetness from the syrup balanced by aromatic bitters.
