Cocktail
Optional - For a stirred, slightly sweeter variation
Method
Cocktail
Chill glass
Place an old-fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to gently chill it; discard ice water before serving.
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass add 2 oz Blanton's Single Barrel bourbon, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.
Prepare glass & strain
Discard ice from the chilled old-fashioned glass. Place a single large ice cube into the glass. Strain the stirred bourbon mixture over the large ice cube using a julep or hawthorne strainer.
Express and garnish
Hold an orange peel over the glass, skin-side down, about 3–4 inches above the surface. Give the peel a firm twist to express the oils over the drink, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass as garnish. Optionally, add a Luxardo cherry on a pick.
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the profile of the single-barrel bourbon.
Optional - Adjustment for proof and sweetness
If Blanton's seems very hot or overly assertive, add 2 drops of water to the mixing glass before stirring to open the aromatics. If you prefer a slightly sweeter drink, use 0.5 oz simple syrup instead of 0.25 oz. Proceed with the same stirring and serving steps.
