Method

Cocktail

1

Measure and combine

Add gin, Campari and sweet vermouth to a mixing glass in equal parts (for example 1 oz / 30 ml each if making a single serving).

2

Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes. Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly for about 20–30 seconds (roughly 20–30 full spoon rotations) until well-chilled and slightly diluted — the glass should sweat and the liquid should be clear and slightly viscous.

3

Prepare glass

Place a large ice cube or two in a rocks (old-fashioned) glass.

4

Strain and serve

Strain the stirred cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared rocks glass over the ice.

5

Garnish

Express an orange peel over the surface by holding the peel skin-side down over the glass and giving it a sharp twist to release the oils, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink as a garnish.

6

Optional adjustments

If you prefer a slightly less bitter Negroni, reduce Campari to 3/4 part and increase gin to 1 1/4 parts. For a slightly brighter citrus aroma, flame the orange peel briefly before expressing, taking care with safety.

Tools & Glassware

7

Use the mixing glass and bar spoon for stirring; strain with the Hawthorne or julep strainer into the rocks glass. Use a peeler or knife to cut the orange peel for garnish.
