1

Chill glass

Place an old-fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes, or fill it with ice and water while you prepare the cocktail to chill the glass.

2

Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled about two-thirds with ice, pour 1 oz Tanqueray No. Ten gin, 1 oz Antica Formula sweet vermouth, and 1/2 oz Cocchi Barolo Chinato.

3

Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly but smoothly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full rotations) until well chilled and slightly diluted. Aim for a silky sheen on the liquid and a slight frosting on the mixing glass.

4

Prepare glass and add ice

If you chilled the glass with ice water, discard the water. Add one large ice cube (or several large clear ice cubes) to the chilled old-fashioned glass.

5

Strain

Strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared glass over the large ice cube using a julep or hawthorne strainer to catch any shards of ice.

6

Garnish

Express the oils from one piece of orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down above the glass and giving it a firm twist. Run the peel's rim around the glass edge and drop it into the drink as garnish.

7

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the layered aromatics: bright citrus from the gin, plush spice and vanilla from the vermouth, and bitter-sweet, rose-and-chocolate notes from the Barolo Chinato.
