Coffee and water

Equipment (optional items listed as ingredients so they appear in same sections)

Method

Equipment prep

  1. 1

    Assemble and warm

Place your drip cone or machine filter basket on the carafe or cup. If using a paper filter, set it in the dripper. Boil 0.1 L (100 ml) filtered water in the kettle and pour it through the empty filter and dripper to rinse the paper and warm the dripper and carafe. Discard the rinse water.

Grind and measure

  1. 2

    Weigh beans

Weigh 35 g (0.035 kg) fresh whole coffee beans. This yields a brew ratio about 1:14 (coffee:water) for 500 ml final yield.

  2. 3

    Grind

Grind the beans to a medium-coarse consistency (similar to coarse sand; slightly coarser than table salt) using a burr grinder. Target grind size for drip/pour-over.

Brewing

  1. 4

    Set ground coffee

Place the ground coffee into the prepared filter and gently level the bed so the grounds are even.

  2. 5

    Bloom (30–45 seconds)

Start a timer. Pour 70–80 ml of hot water (heated to 92–96°C / 197–205°F) evenly over the grounds to saturate them completely. This is the bloom pour and releases CO2. Let the coffee bloom for 30–45 seconds.

  3. 6

    Main pour (2–3 minutes)

After bloom, pour the remaining hot water in slow, concentric circles or steady pulses, avoiding pouring directly on the filter. Aim to finish pouring by 2:00–2:30 minutes. Total water added should be about 500 ml (including bloom). Keep the water level above the grounds but not overflowing the dripper.

  4. 7

    Drain

Allow the brewed coffee to drain through the grounds completely. Total brew time (from first pour to final drip) should be about 3 to 3:30 minutes for a medium-coarse grind. If it drains much faster, make grind finer; if much slower, make grind coarser for next brew.

Finish and serve

  1. 8

    Remove dripper and serve

Remove the dripper and discard the used grounds and filter. Swirl the carafe gently to homogenize the brew, then pour into cups and serve immediately. Taste and adjust future brews by changing grind size, coffee weight, or water temperature to reach desired strength and extraction.

  2. 9

    Storage note

Store any leftover brewed coffee in a thermal carafe for up to 30–60 minutes. For best flavor, brew only what you'll drink within 20–30 minutes.
