Method
KIDS FRENCH TOAST - Custard
Make the custard
In a shallow wide bowl or pie dish, crack 2 large eggs and whisk until combined. Add 1 cup whole milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Whisk thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and slightly frothy and the sugar is dissolved.
Prepare bread
Arrange 6 slices of thick-sliced bread so they are ready to dip. If bread is very fresh and soft, lightly toast for 30–45 seconds per side to help it absorb custard without falling apart.
KIDS FRENCH TOAST - Cooking
Heat pan
Place a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons unsalted butter and allow it to melt and foam but not brown (about 1 minute). Tilt the pan so butter coats the surface.
Dip and cook
Working one slice at a time, submerge each bread slice into the custard for 5–7 seconds per side (longer if using very thick or stale bread) until soaked but not falling apart. Let excess drip back into the bowl. Place the soaked slice into the hot skillet. Cook 2–3 minutes on the first side until golden brown and set, then flip and cook another 1.5–2 minutes until golden and cooked through. Repeat with remaining slices, adding more butter (about 1 teaspoon) to the pan as needed between batches.
Keep warm
If making multiple batches, keep cooked slices on a baking sheet in a 200°F (95°C) oven to stay warm and slightly crisp while finishing the rest.
KIDS FRENCH TOAST - Toppings & Serving
Plate and top
Arrange 2–3 slices per child on plates. Dust lightly with 1 tablespoon powdered sugar divided among servings. Add fresh berries or banana slices (divide the 1 cup among plates). Serve with about 1 tablespoon maple syrup per slice (6 tablespoons total divided) and optional yogurt or whipped cream on the side (about 1/2 cup total).
Safety and portion tips
Let the French toast cool 1 minute before serving to kids so it’s not too hot. For smaller children, cut slices into strips for easy handling and quicker cooling.
