Base Wash
Stain-Targeting Boosters
Application & Finishing
Method
Base Wash
Prepare solution
Combine 1.5 cups warm water, 1 teaspoon mild liquid dish soap, and 2 tablespoons white distilled vinegar in a small bowl or jar. Stir gently until soap is dispersed. This is the general-purpose base wash for lifting many fresh stains.
Blot the stained area with a clean white cloth to remove as much excess material as possible. Work from the outside of the stain toward the center to avoid spreading.
Stain-Targeting Boosters
Make a boost paste (for set or greasy spots)
In a separate small container, mix 1 tablespoon baking soda with 1/2 teaspoon salt and enough of the base wash (about 1–2 teaspoons) to form a paste. Apply a thin layer of paste directly to the stain using a clean cloth or toothbrush. Let sit 5–10 minutes to absorb oils and lift the stain.
Use hydrogen peroxide for colored or protein stains
For fresh colored stains (wine, juice) or protein stains (blood), dampen the stain with a few drops of the base wash, then apply 2 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide directly to the spot. Let it bubble and work for 1–3 minutes. Blot gently — do not rub vigorously to avoid fabric damage.
If stain is both greasy and pigmented, first apply the baking soda paste to absorb grease, brush/pat off after 5–10 minutes, then apply hydrogen peroxide as described.
Application & Finishing
Agitate and blot
Use the soft-bristled toothbrush or cloth to gently agitate the treated area in small circular motions for 15–30 seconds. Blot with a clean white cloth or paper towel to lift dissolved stain material. Repeat application of base wash or boosters as needed, alternating blotting and gentle brushing, until no more color transfers to the cloth.
Rinse the area
Once the stain is diminished, pour or mist a small amount (about 2–3 tablespoons) of cold water over the spot to remove residue. Blot repeatedly with a clean cloth until mostly dry and no soap or peroxide remains.
Dry and inspect
Allow the fabric to air dry flat or hang, avoiding heat until you are sure the stain is removed (heat can set remaining stain). After dry, inspect the area. If remnants persist, repeat the appropriate booster step and rinse again. For delicate items or persistent stains, launder according to garment care label or take to a professional cleaner.
Clean up: dispose of used paper towels or launder cloths and rinse mixing container. Store leftover base wash in a sealed jar for up to 48 hours; hydrogen peroxide should be kept in its original opaque bottle away from light.
