Method
Prepare equipment
Sanitize
Thoroughly clean and sanitize all utensils, measuring spoons, mixing bowls, and containers with hot soapy water, rinse, and optionally wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Work on a clean surface.
Make the base
Measure 1 cup distilled water into a clean mixing bowl or beaker at room temperature.
Add 1/2 cup unscented liquid castile soap to the distilled water and stir gently to combine. Avoid creating excessive foam.
Add hydrating and soothing ingredients
Add 2 tbsp pure aloe vera gel to the soap-water mixture and whisk slowly until incorporated.
Add 1 tsp vegetable glycerin and 1/2 tsp jojoba oil, stirring until the mixture is uniform. The small amount of oil helps moisturize without leaving a heavy residue.
Incorporate actives and adjust pH
If using niacinamide or zinc PCA powders, pre-dissolve each in a teaspoon of warm distilled water (separately) to avoid clumping, then add to the main mixture and stir until fully dissolved.
Add 1/4 tsp lactic acid (10% solution) or 1/4 tsp 5% lactic acid to gently acidify the cleanser toward a skin-friendly pH (~5.0–6.0). Mix and test pH with pH strips; if pH is above 6, add an additional few drops of lactic acid and retest. If pH is below 4.5, dilute with a little distilled water.
Preserve and finish
Add 1/4 tsp phenoxyethanol-based preservative (follow manufacturer's recommended usage rate; adjust quantity if necessary). Stir thoroughly to distribute evenly.
If desired and skin-tolerant, add 1 drop of essential oil and mix. Keep additional fragrance minimal to avoid irritation.
Transfer the finished cleanser into a pump bottle or squeeze bottle using a funnel. Label with name and date. Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight.
Use and shelf life
Use: Wet face, pump a small amount into hands, lather gently, massage onto face for 30–60 seconds, rinse thoroughly, and follow with serums/moisturizer as desired.
Shelf life: With preservative and clean handling, expect about 3–6 months. Without a preservative, store refrigerated and use within 1–2 weeks.
