Earl Grey Tea Base

Method

Earl Grey Tea Base

1

Heat water and steep

Bring 1 cup (240 ml) of water to a near-boil (about 200–205°F / 93–96°C). Place 1.5 tsp of Earl Grey loose-leaf tea (or 1 strong tea bag) into a teapot or heatproof cup. Pour the hot water over the tea and steep for 3.5–4 minutes for a full bergamot flavor. Do not oversteep to avoid bitterness.

2

Remove the tea leaves or tea bag. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (or to taste). If using simple syrup or honey, add an equivalent sweetness. If desired, add 1/2 tsp of lemon peel while steeping for an extra bright aroma, then discard the peel when removing the tea.

Steamed Milk

3

Steam and froth milk

Heat 1 cup (240 ml) of milk to about 150–155°F (65–68°C). If you have a steam wand, steam until the milk is silky with microfoam and you have approximately 2 tablespoons of foam. If you don't have a steam wand, heat the milk on the stove or in the microwave until hot (but not boiling), then froth using a handheld milk frother, French press (pump 20–30 times), or vigorous whisking to create microfoam.

4

Gently tap the milk container on the counter and swirl to integrate the foam into the milk for a smooth texture.

Assembly & Garnish

5

Pour the prepared Earl Grey tea into a 10–12 oz (300–350 ml) cup, leaving enough room for the milk (about 1/3 of the cup).

6

Slowly pour the steamed milk into the tea, using a spoon to hold back the foam if you prefer less foam. Spoon 1–2 tablespoons of the milk foam on top.

7

Optional: sprinkle a light dusting (about 1/8 tsp) of dried lavender buds and/or a tiny pinch (about 1/8 tsp) of ground cinnamon or vanilla powder on the foam for aroma and presentation.

8

Serve immediately while hot. Stir once if you prefer a uniform sweetness and vanilla flavor throughout.
