Method

Prepare equipment

1

Warm the serving cup by rinsing it with hot water or leaving it near the espresso machine briefly; this helps keep the drink hotter longer.

2

If using an espresso machine, ensure portafilter is clean, tamp the ground coffee evenly, and preheat the group head briefly. If using a stovetop or pod machine, preheat as needed.

Brew espresso

3

Pull the shot

Brew a double shot of espresso (about 60 ml). Start extraction on a preheated portafilter or machine and stop when you reach approximately 60 ml. Aim for 25–30 seconds extraction for a balanced shot. If using a pod or stovetop method, produce an equivalent-strength 60 ml espresso concentrate.

Assemble Americano

4

Pour 120 ml of hot water (about 85–95°C) into the warmed serving cup.

5

Pour the freshly brewed 60 ml double espresso gently over the hot water. Pouring espresso over water preserves crema; adding water first creates a slightly different texture. Both methods are acceptable—traditional Americanos are often made by adding espresso to hot water.

6

Stir gently once to combine.

Finish and serve

7

Taste and add sugar or sweetener to taste if desired. If you prefer, add milk or cream to taste and stir until incorporated.

8

Serve immediately while hot.
