1

Prepare glass and ice

Chill an old-fashioned (rocks) glass if desired by filling it with ice and letting it sit for 1–2 minutes; then discard that ice. Alternatively, proceed with a fresh large ice cube or sphere in the glass.

2

Build the cocktail

In a mixing glass or shaker (no shaking required), add 1 oz gin, 1 oz Campari, and 1 oz sweet vermouth. Add several large ice cubes (enough to fill most of the mixing glass) to chill and dilute properly.

3

Stir

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for about 20–30 seconds (roughly 20–30 full turns) until well chilled and slightly diluted. The liquid should be cold to the touch on the outside of the mixing glass.

4

Strain and serve

Discard the ice from the chilled serving glass (if used). Place a fresh large ice cube or sphere into the glass. Strain the mixed cocktail into the prepared glass over the large ice.

5

Garnish

Express the oils from a piece of orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the glass and giving it a quick, firm bend so oils spray onto the surface. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop it into the cocktail as a garnish.

6

Serve

Serve immediately. Optionally provide a stirring straw so the drinker can adjust dilution as desired.
