Method
Prepare
Chill glass
Place a large old-fashioned glass (12–16 oz capacity) in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare ingredients to chill the glass. This keeps the Large Russian cold longer.
Mixing
Assemble cocktail
Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes (about 1/2 to 3/4 cup). Pour in 3 oz vodka and 2 oz coffee liqueur.
Shake
Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is frosty and the mixture is well chilled.
Add milk
Strain the vodka and coffee liqueur mixture into the chilled large old-fashioned glass filled with fresh ice (use the remaining ~1/2 cup ice). Slowly pour 3 oz cold whole milk over the back of a spoon or down the side of the glass so it layers slightly atop the liqueur mixture. For a creamier texture, use half-and-half instead of milk.
Optional stir
Gently stir 1–2 times with a bar spoon to lightly combine — leave some layering if desired. Avoid over-mixing if you prefer a marbled appearance.
