Hot Dogs & Buns

Method

Prepare Sausages

1

Score (optional)

If desired, lightly score the top of each hot dog with shallow diagonal slits spaced about 1/2 inch apart. Scoring helps them heat evenly and creates a bit of crispness.

2

Choose a cooking method: boiling, pan-frying, grilling, or steaming. Each yields slightly different texture — boiling/steaming gives plump, soft dogs; pan-frying or grilling gives a browned, slightly crisp exterior. Preheat accordingly: bring a pot of water to a gentle simmer for boiling/steaming, or heat a skillet/grill over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil if pan-frying.

3

Cook the hot dogs

Boiling/steaming: place sausages in simmering (not rolling boil) water and cook 4–6 minutes until heated through. Pan-frying/grilling: place sausages in the hot skillet or on the grill and cook 6–8 minutes, turning occasionally until evenly browned and heated through. Internal temperature should reach 165–170°F (74–77°C) for most sausages.

Toast Buns (optional)

4

If toasting, split buns but keep hinge intact. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a skillet over medium heat. Place buns cut-side down in the skillet and toast 30–60 seconds until golden and slightly crisp. Alternatively, place buns on the grill face-down for 20–30 seconds.

Assemble & Top

5

Place each cooked sausage into a toasted or untoasted bun.

6

Add condiments to taste. A classic build: 1 tablespoon yellow mustard and 1 tablespoon ketchup per dog, spread along the length of the sausage.

7

Add diced onion (about 2 tablespoons per dog if using), and 1 tablespoon sweet relish per dog. If using shredded cheddar, sprinkle 1–2 tablespoons on top while the hot dog is still hot to help it melt.

8

Top with sport peppers or sliced jalapeño for heat (use sparingly — 1/2 pepper per dog or to taste).

9

Serve immediately while hot.

Serving & Storage

10

Serve hot with sides such as fries, chips, or coleslaw. Leftover cooked sausages can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days; reheat gently in a skillet or microwave until warmed through.
