Method

Sandwich

1

Prepare bread

Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. This will be the outside of the sandwich and helps achieve a golden crust if toasting. On the unbuttered side of one slice, spread the mayonnaise evenly; on the unbuttered side of the other slice, spread the mustard.

2

Assemble fillings

Place the slice of cheese on the mayonnaise-spread side of one bread slice. Layer the 3 slices of deli ham on top of the cheese, arranging them so they cover the cheese. If using, add the lettuce leaf and the 2 tomato slices on top of the ham. Sprinkle the tomato with a pinch of salt and a pinch of black pepper to season.

3

Close sandwich

Place the second slice of bread on top with the buttered side facing outward. Press gently to compact the sandwich slightly so the fillings hold together.

4

Serve cold or toasted

Cold: Cut the sandwich in half diagonally or down the middle and serve immediately. Toasted (optional): Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the sandwich in the skillet, buttered side down. Cook 2-3 minutes until the bread is golden brown, then flip and cook an additional 2-3 minutes until the other side is golden and the cheese begins to melt. Remove from heat, let rest 1 minute, then cut and serve.
