Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glassware

Place two serving glasses in the refrigerator or fill with ice water for 5–10 minutes to chill. Discard ice water before assembling the drink.

  2. 2

If using, squeeze fresh lime and lemon to measure 1/2 tablespoon each (about 7–8 ml total combined). Set aside.

Mixing the Maine Root

  1. 3

Fill each chilled serving glass halfway with ice cubes (about 1/2 cup ice per glass). If you prefer less dilution, use fewer cubes or large ice.

  2. 4

Divide the chilled root beer between the two glasses, pouring 1 cup (120 ml) into each glass. Pour gently down the side of the glass to preserve carbonation.

  3. 5

Top each glass with 1/2 cup (120 ml) chilled ginger beer, pouring slowly to maintain fizz. The total ratio is 2:1 root beer to ginger beer.

  4. 6

Add 1/4 tablespoon fresh lime juice and 1/4 tablespoon fresh lemon juice to each glass (split the measured citrus between the two). Gently stir once with a bar spoon or long spoon to combine flavors — avoid vigorous stirring to keep carbonation.

  5. 7

If using Angostura bitters, add a single dash (about 1/4 teaspoon) to each glass for additional aromatic depth. Stir gently to incorporate.

Garnish & Serve

  1. 8

Twist the orange peel over each glass to express oils, then rub the peel around the rim and drop the twist into the drink. Alternatively, use an orange slice on the rim.

  2. 9

Garnish each glass with a mint sprig if desired. Serve immediately while the sodas are fizzy.
