Method
Prepare Glass
- 1
Rim the glass
Select a chilled old-fashioned or rocks glass. Spread the smoked salt on a small plate. Rub a cut edge of grapefruit around the glass rim or wet the rim lightly with a lime wedge, then dip the rim into the smoked salt to coat about half an inch. Set the glass aside.
Mix Cocktail
- 2
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz tequila, 0.5 oz mezcal, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz fresh grapefruit juice, 0.5 oz agave syrup, 0.5 oz aperitivo, and 2 dashes orange bitters.
- 3
Dry shake (optional)
If you want a slightly silkier texture, close the shaker and shake without ice for 8–10 seconds to integrate juices and syrup.
- 4
Shake with ice
Add ice to the shaker (enough to fill), then shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well chilled and the shaker is frosty.
- 5
Strain
Double-strain the cocktail into the prepared smoked-salt-rimmed rocks glass over a single large ice cube or sphere.
Finish & Garnish
- 6
Express the oils from a grapefruit twist over the drink by holding the twist over the glass and giving it a firm squeeze so oils spritz across the surface, then run the peel around the rim if desired and drop the twist into the drink as garnish.
- 7
Serve immediately. The smoky mezcal and smoked-salt rim will accent the tequila base while the aperitivo and bitters add bright bitterness and depth — a cocktail that truly 'hits different.'
