Hot Toddy Base

Aromatics & Garnish

Optional Enhancements

Method

Prepare Aromatics & Garnish

  1. 1

    Clove-studded lemon wheel

Take a lemon wheel about 1/4-inch thick and stud it with 4–6 whole cloves evenly spaced. Set aside. This will serve as a fragrant garnish and infuse subtle clove aroma as you sip.

  2. 2

    Optional ginger and orange

If using, slice fresh ginger very thin (2 slices) and cut a wide strip of orange peel, expressing its oils by twisting before setting aside.

Make the Hot Toddy

  1. 3

Preheat your mug by pouring a small amount of hot water into it, swirling briefly, then discarding the water. This keeps the toddy hot longer.

  2. 4

Add the honey (1 tbs) to the warm mug. Pour in the fresh lemon juice (1/2 oz). If using ginger, add the slices now.

  3. 5

Pour in the whiskey (2 oz). Stir gently to combine and dissolve the honey into the spirit and lemon mixture.

  4. 6

Top with hot water (4 oz) — water should be just off a full boil (about 200–205°F / 93–96°C) to keep volatile aromatics but avoid bitter burn. Stir once to integrate.

  5. 7

Taste and adjust sweetness or acidity: add a small additional 1/2 tbs honey if you prefer sweeter, or another teaspoon of lemon juice for brightness.

Finish & Serve

  1. 8

Garnish the toddy by dropping in the cinnamon stick and the clove-studded lemon wheel. If using, add the star anise and orange twist. Let sit for 30–60 seconds to allow aromas to bloom.

  2. 9

Serve immediately while hot. When drinking, you can hold the mug close to nose to inhale the warm spice and citrus aromatics for the full Eldest Daughter experience.

  3. 10

Discard garnishes after drinking or remove them if you plan to sip slowly; ginger slices can be left in for a gradually intensifying ginger note.
