Cocktail Base
Garnish & Finish
Method
Prepare Glass & Ice
- 1
Chill & ice
Place a rocks glass in the freezer or fill with ice water to chill while you build the cocktail. If using a large cube, have it ready to drop into the glass just before straining.
Build & Mix
- 2
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass add 2 oz bourbon, 0.5 oz calvados (or apple liqueur), 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.25 oz pure maple syrup, 2 dashes orange bitters and 1 dash Angostura bitters.
- 3
Add ice
Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice (enough to chill quickly and dilute slightly).
- 4
Finish & Serve
- 5
Prepare glass
Discard ice water from the chilled rocks glass if used. Place the large ice cube into the glass.
- 6
Strain
Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, double-strain (optional) the cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube to keep the texture smooth and free of small shards.
- 7
Garnish & aromatic finish
Express the oils of an orange twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down over the glass and giving it a sharp bend so the oils spray onto the surface. Run the twist around the rim and drop it in. If using, float a dehydrated apple slice on top for visual appeal and a hint of apple aroma.
- 8
Serve
Serve immediately. The cocktail balances warm bourbon with bright apple and citrus notes and a hint of sweetness from the maple. Encourage sipping slowly to enjoy the evolving aromas as the ice melts.
