Method

Cocktail

1

Chill glass

Place an old-fashioned (rocks) glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to lightly chill it.

2

Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or shaker filled about halfway with ice, pour 2 oz 1792 Small Batch bourbon, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and add 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

3

Stir

Stir the mixture briskly with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until well-chilled and slightly diluted, about 15–20% dilution. The mixing glass should feel very cold to the touch.

4

Prepare glass and ice

Discard the ice water from the chilled old-fashioned glass if used. Add one large, clear ice cube to the glass.

5

Strain

Using a julep strainer or Hawthorne, strain the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the old-fashioned glass over the large ice cube.

6

Express oil & garnish

Hold the orange peel with the outside (zest) facing down over the drink and give it a sharp twist to express the oils across the surface, then rub the peel on the rim and drop it into the glass. Optionally skewer a Luxardo cherry and rest it on the ice or drop it into the drink.
