Cocktail
Optional rinse/finish
Method
Preparation
- 1
Chill glass
Place a rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice and water while you build the cocktail to chill it.
- 2
Optional absinthe rinse
If using the absinthe rinse, pour 0.25 tsp of absinthe into the chilled rocks glass, swirl to coat the inside, then discard excess (or pour out into a small container). Set the glass aside.
Mixing
- 3
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass, add 2 oz 1792 Full Proof bourbon, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz Benedictine, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, and 1 dash orange bitters.
- 4
Add ice and stir
Fill the mixing glass with large ice or plenty of cubed ice. Stir gently but thoroughly for 30–45 seconds (about 20–30 full revolutions) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted.
- 5
Strain
Discard the ice/water from the chilled rocks glass (or use the absinthe-rinsed glass). Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the cocktail into the prepared glass over a single large ice cube (or a fresh heap of ice if preferred).
Garnish & Finish
- 6
Express the oils from an orange twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the twist skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the drink and giving it a good squeeze to spray the oils across the surface. Rub the twist around the rim of the glass and drop it into the drink as garnish.
- 7
If using a cherry, skewer a Luxardo cherry and rest it on the edge or drop into the drink.
- 8
Serve immediately and enjoy responsibly.
