Method

Prep

1

Chill a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer for at least 10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you build the drink.

2

If using, gently rinse the lavender sprig in cool water and set aside. Prepare a lemon twist (long thin peel, avoid too much pith).

Mixing

3

Combine and Chill

Fill a mixing glass with the large ice cubes. Add 2 oz gin, 0.5 oz dry vermouth, 0.5 oz elderflower liqueur, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes orange bitters.

4

Stir

Stir the mixture for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted. Aim for proper dilution so the drink feels silky, not overly watered.

Finish & Garnish

5

Dump the ice or water from the chilled glass. Fine-strain the stirred cocktail into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass to avoid any tiny shards of ice.

6

Express the lemon twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding it skin-side down and giving a firm twist to release the oils, then run the rim of the glass with the peel and drop it into the drink or rest on the rim.

7

Gently slap the lavender sprig between your palms once to release aroma and place it on the rim or floated atop the drink. If using an edible flower, float it carefully on the surface for an elegant touch.

8

Serve immediately and advise guests to inhale the lavender aroma before sipping; the floral top notes contrast the sanctimonious dryness of the base spirit.
