Build and shake
Dry shake (if using egg white)
In a cocktail shaker, combine aged rum, rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, carmine reduction (or grenadine), fresh lime juice, fresh orange juice, Luxardo (or maraschino), rich simple syrup, Angostura bitters, orange bitters, and the egg white. Seal the shaker and dry-shake (no ice) vigorously for 15–20 seconds to emulsify the egg white and incorporate air for a silky texture.
Wet shake
Add a generous scoop of ice to the shaker, seal, and shake hard for 12–15 seconds until well chilled and the shaker feels very cold (~16–18°F / -9–8°C surface temperature).
Strain and serve
Discard ice from the chilled glass (if you used ice water), then double-strain the cocktail through a fine mesh strainer into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora to achieve a smooth, debris-free texture.
Garnish with a dehydrated blood orange slice or an orange twist expressed over the surface to release oils; rest the twist on the rim or float the dehydrated slice. Optionally, lightly slap a micro basil or lemon balm leaf and float it on top for an herbal perfume.
Serve immediately and note the balance: the aged rum and rye provide backbone and spice, the vermouth and Luxardo add depth, carmine reduction gives color and a rounded pomegranate-sweet note, while lime and orange juices brighten the profile.
